Linking learning and the winning effect was the original title for this blog post but I think "I have a lot to learn..." sums up where I discover I am.Every time I read, listen attend a conference, meet people I am struck by the fact that I still have so much to learn.
Just when
- I think I understand
- have made a correlation in my head
- define something through my practice
I connect further to information that brings me right up in front of a new open door.
The weekend of the 12th of April was a full one one. Friday night started with attended the opening of Irish Science Teachers Association National Conference 'The Wonders of Science' which was held in Gorey, Co. Wexford. I'm not a science teacher but the chairwoman and I had worked on ensuring a mini-coderdojo was in place at the conference so teachers attending could see it in action more on that later.
The opening talk was by Ireton Roberston called 'The Winning Effect' discussing the Neuroscience Effect of Success and Failure. A very interesting lecture which had resonance with the rest of the weekend. But I found his presentation to be heavily geared to men in terms of examples.
The following morning I drove three of us from Coderdojo Gorey up to DojoCon 2013. That deserves a post in its own right which I will do but for the moment read one of our local mentors Laura Kennys blog post or Memories of Slane or Pam O'Brien's wonderful They Came...They kicked ass aka Limerick Coderdojo or Clare Slevin's My 'parents' perspective Portarlington.
Friday night, Saturday morning were strung together in several ways
Those non-specific dojo observations are elements I work with in adult education and community development work, my own learning be reinforced, confirmed. Yet open to learning and further exploration.
Other things I've been reading and thinking about that flow in and out of open self directed learning:
Learners Should Be Developing Their Own Essential Questions which calls for independent thinking, exploration, invention and intuitive navigation. Friday night, Saturday morning were strung together in several ways
- our Gorey mini-dojo was linked into from DojoCon in Slane by Linsay and James Whelton
- STEM education is important
- technology is a great equaliser
- again I am reminded that positive encouragement is key to self esteem and empowering the winning effect
- mentors matter
- everyone has a great story around their dojo!
- make it fun

What are the benefits of embracing choice-based assessments, and how can we prepare for this assessment paradigm shift?
