The space between ideas and action

"Horses for courses..."
As a self employed creative person I get paid to deliver solutions. Contact hours only for training, delivering a project, facilitation and project management work.
Describe the work in what ever way you want across business, education, community or culture ultimately I get a call, email or asked in a meeting:

"We are thinking about doing this, what do you think?"

Then I extrapolate possible options creative ideas, my experience, what I sense is needed, practical solutions or my left of field inventive options from my creative bank of ideas (I keep a ready supply in my top brain drawer). I ask questions to tailor my response about budgets and resources and deadlines.
This morning I am struck after a discussion on a project, a call on another possible project and a third, an email enquiry, that as a self employed person I don't get paid for the space between an enquiry and the action. Which is the solving. That sucks. That's the bit I like best.
So what do you think? are you better off in full time employment getting paid for the bits in between?
