Some times its about art but mostly it's about people.
That is what I was thinking today. Busy schedule as the deadline for the latest #NDA project draws towards ship date on the 22nd of January. Not being able to talk about a large portion of research, project management and general work flow has altered my social media communication space for sure. But it has also altered and sorted out some other things I have been in a quandary about... more on that as we move further into 2013.
One of the challenges for the #NDA project as it comes to a crunch week is that we are working in a team that has 4 physical locations. I am reminded of some training work I did with a multinational company in 2007, my nonverbal communication training challenge using experiential training and arts based methodologies.
Communication and clarity are key elements to getting it right and getting the job done. In my experience that way of working is best established through building relationships and integrity. So I get on with it looking forward to the big reveal.
This week I look for ward to starting back with the Women of the World group in Arklow, we did some great work last term and the curriculum for this terms looks at making using fiber and felt, paper and clay. Tomorrow we meet in a new space so it will be a bit of acclimatisation, reviewing my proposed curriculum getting their input and finalising it.
As I organise and sort through work I am also thinking about the successful launch of Coderdojo Gorey last Saturday. My faith in humanity restored by being able to find 8 people with coding skills willing to volunteer their time to teach children and teenagers coding. 56+ families have expressed an interest and a lot of them showed up in the library last weekend. It was a huge crowd to contend with. But we did. I have had a bee in my bonnet about establishing a coding club for a long time and it was great to see it come together. Parents enthused and volunteered time and it looks like a great group will form around the club. I have some reservations about the CoderDojo model I think it favours the have's and makes no provision for the have nots. The digital divide can be very large in a rural community. Social inclusion is important to my creative and innovation practice. I have been figuring out ways to hack the idea and get it to work. Looks like I may partner with the local library to resolve that element, its on their agenda too. But again it goes back to people...
So do you agree? or what is it about for you?
Some times its about ______* but mostly it's about people.
So fill in * your own words and let me know your statement.

Interesting reading and looking forward to 22nd January when you can reveal all!
ReplyDeleteAm glad to hear you're looking at the social inclusion aspect of Cododojo. Luckily we would be in a position to send one child this year, unlike many, but it's the same old being in too many places at once issue that prevents! One local group insist adults accompany teens, another doesn't mind, which suits a mum who's doing child pick ups and drop offs all day but.... like you discovered, both groups are oversubscribed! There's clearly a hunger for it so a massive well done for getting a group going in your area!
thanks Dee. Icould not set up something like this and not address the digital divide it would not sit well with me, social inclusion and community development are core to my creative practice. I decided to start using the coderdojo model because sometimes we just need a place to start. I am framing the club in a way that if any child or teen want to learn to code in Gorey we are going to try and accommodate them. It will depend on volunteers and mentors, so far so good. I've just put up an interest survey on FB so we shall see what that tells us. In the end it will be there club...
