Yesterday as I approached the boarding gate 108 in Terminal 1, Dublin for RyanAir flight to London a casually dressed man put out his hand to me in an officious manner. I did a double take Michael O'Leary one of the most controversial men in Irish business an innovator of international business and air travel - asking me for my boarding pass?
I did a double take, hesitated... my instinct was to interview him, ask him questions. But he was on the ground working so I respected that and handed him my board pass. He tore the bottom piece away and handed the relevant piece back and commended me on the fact I had my passport ready!
As I went on to the tarmac I connected my 3G and tweeted. I was astounded. Turned off my phone and boarded the flight.
I have mixed feelings about the revolution that is Ryan Air within the aviation industry but love or hate the poster boy Michael O'Leary, Ryan Air has democratised air travel and made it more accessible. As I relayed the story to people I met yesterday at Digital Undoc Camp someone commented on the fact that being on a RyanAir flight is like flying in a billboard advert.
So I am amused that my tweet has caused a bit of a flurry, the Irish Times called me several times before getting through to me and asking me for a comment - was it a media stunt? I don't know. But does that not miss the point some what? when was the last time you meet the Chief executive of an organisation working on the ground? I've never meet the CEO of a supermarket packing shelves.
The closest I have every been to someone as extraordinary as Mr. O'Leary is another love to hate man Mr Bill Gates who in the early '90s he spoke to our team in the Dublin offices of Microsoft about his vision "to put a computer in every home".
Let me be clear my journey to London was already extraordinary before I arrived at the airport.
My thanks to the Community foundation in partnership with the Migrants Rights Centre of Ireland for supporting my funding to get to London to attend #Undoccamp.‘Digital Undoc’ is a project commissioned by the Paul Hamlyn Foundation and Unbound Philanthropy, delivered by On Road Media.
Stay tuned for more information on the Undoc camp twitter hashtag #UndocCamp - I'll be blogging and speaking about the camp on my return to Ireland stay tuned for more information.
