work, education, practice & research converge

It happened again today... as I stood in front of a group facilitating 'Self in the big picture' 8 week introduction to social science for early school leavers... my work converged. I found myself writing on the board "We are all different we are all the same". I found myself discussing topics raised in Barcelona on the first field trip which was to an ethically diverse area, I used the Barcelona experience to share unintentional prejudice and more obvious racism .
"We are all different we are all the same" is the title of a photography I took in December 2011 and blogged about in making work in 2012 personal the image was the starting point for hosted discussions on my Insider/Outsider project in Barcelona. I think it is the first image for a new body of work connected to my personal work around insider/outsider.

The topic today in Self in the big picture was 'Racism and Prejudice' again another over lap as for the last week I have been working on a documentary - its theme are that of social justice, inclusion the work of family resource centres in removing isolation and supporting people in their lives.
So yet again different strands of my work weave threads in and out.
The session today was meant to be densely using worksheets and writing but I am aware of some literacy issues in the group so broke free of writing and used movement, body sculpture, group discussion, personal reflection, drawing and feedback. It worked really well. Feeling really happy about how I am able to bring the academic words off the paper and make them experiential in the classroom.
The last session was on Power. The feedback was the role play was what stuck. One of the women found it so useful that she change her behaviour and felt empowered to take action and sort a personal issue out, bravo! I see signs of them moving from their points of interest out to bigger contexts. This is really exciting to witness and I'm really enjoying the process of teaching, facilitating and sharing learning with them.
When I stand among others to teach and facilitate I always learn something. I think the moment an educator or facilitator (or artist working with people) stands and delivers something as a  "fait accompli" they fail.
But as my recent experience has proved we learn a lot from failure.
Have you had experience of failure? What did you learn from it?
