Networking and Creative Strategy, Waterford CEB WEN
I really enjoyed facillitating the Waterford County Enterprise Board Women Enterprise Network last night [except for the issue of the virtual computer].
A diverse group of enterprising women presented themselves in Lawlors in Dungarvan, Co. Waterford. Businesses included a nutritionist clinic, training and support for parents, photography, bird control, building contractors, a business centre, craft designers and studio, health and beauty salon, editors, freelance marketing, holiday cottages, auctioneers and an agri business to name a few.
I had planned to present this presentation to the group but ended up doing a perfomance art presentation instead:
Two worksheets were provided, along with A3 sheets of paper, some post-it notes and a feedback form. The session lasted two hours.
What the enterprising network enjoyed most (direct quotes from feedback forms):
Hope you enjoyed the sides.
Any questions? Toodle over to twitter and ask me @creativedynamix or contact me on Facebook or please leave a comment.
Thanks
Did you agree with everything in the slides?
What have I missed?
What else have you found about networking that works or does not work FOR YOU and your business?

Diversity in work
In the last two weeks I have been really enjoying the diversity in the approach to my business which is based on an experimental and sustainable approach to an arts practice, where I mix all my skills for your benefit or the benefit of a businesses/organisation.Wednesday and Thursday of both weeks I was teaching Hand Rolled Wet Felt Making training three co-workers (two Koreans and one German) plus a special needs resident from the local Camphill Community (Duffcarrig and Ballymoney, North Wexford). Camphill Communities of Ireland are part of an international charitable trust working with people with intellectual disabilities and other kinds of special needs.
The aim of teaching them Hand Rolled Wet Felt for four session was that two of the co-workers will be able run a Ballymoney based workshop each day with residents and in particular the one that came to the workshop. She (will remain nameless as part of my 'protection policy' available on request) has limited mobility and use of her hands is restricted along with limited communication and a small range of verbal sounds. Her hands are restricted and the felt making will be excellent for the tactile nature and improved flexibility. So not only was I teaching how to make felt from sheep fleece and ensuring that there was a solid understanding of technique. But I was also looking at how to adapt the process for someone with profound limited mobility. An interesting challenge and one I really enjoyed. We have found several solutions for enabling a special needs person with limited hand mobility to make felt. We also saw a level of engagement, surprising interest and information recall from the Camphill Resident which was great and I hold out great hopes for this project which I will be following.
Last Friday the felt making sessions was followed by 'Creative Challenges with a twist' for Microsoft Ireland for a team in EDC. The session was about fun, work life balance, making space for new ideas through new experiences and team development using a frame work of the arts and a creative learning environment. I designed the session to include three workshops based on clay, construction with recycled materials and animation (with Mic Fortune). The training was multi-levelled with benefits built in for the team and individual. I hope to share a bit more with you on that soon. Feedback was given in a one word wall response, traditional paper format and video response (like a big brother video diary). As I was waiting in reception I meet someone whom I vaguely know, he quizzed me to what I was doing in the training session. After some talk about the company he commented that the team I was about to work with "are under major stress and pressure... and they called you" it was rather an ascorbic comment. In hindsight I realise that being asked to facilitate the training was a massive vote of confidence from Microsoft about the way and work, what I bring to organisations and the type of work I do. It was a challenging group to work with the feedback forms are interesting and it successfully met all the criteria. I was also glad to give work on this project to three other artists.
On Saturday at 3pm I was in Enniscorthy Library teaching twenty children between the ages of eight to twelve how to make Christmas decorations! It was fantastic and I enjoyed it just as much as they did. What a contrast to the previous weeks work though. I have n't been working with children since the summer and I had forgotten how much fun they were to work with. We managed to get snowflakes made and looped rings. I was fascinated when it came to cutting the snow flake shape how the information was received and carried out plus at the mixed dexterity of the group. Lots of lovely smiling faces. I got all the children to wear name badges it was so nice to call each one by name. There were 3 Roisin's in the room - I'd never experienced that before! Paint coloured paper, glues galore. It was great and the staff in the library were so friendly.
I really enjoy diversity in my work I think it adds value to all my clients and keeps me challenged.
I learn something every time I teach or facilitate others.

What box?
My new twitter background is one of my works of art! My famous blue style painting with a red box. It is titled 'what box?'
Recently when talking to people about what I do the inevitable 'think outside the box' metaphor arises. At the moment the phrase intensely irritates me and I have been trying to figure out why? I find myself trying to alter even that perception of a staid metaphor and I laugh throwing out 'hey, I don't even bring a box'.
While I aspire to be creative, think differently and challenge others to think differently through my work the truth is we all have boxes.
We all have parameters we live in. We all have conditions and environments we were raised in plus those have experienced both socially and culturally. Even when we try really hard not to live, think, breath from a 'box' that is still a set of conditions we are forcing.
So there are two things I want to say about your 'box':
1. Take stock of what you have in your box.
2. Next time you’re having a hard time communicating with someone think about what their box is like - if you can try swapping boxes.
Think about all the people you communicate or come in contact with today what do their boxes look like?
Don't be so busy in your box. look up look around, let me know what you discover...
